The origins of the Foundation date back to the former Federal SeroTherapy Institute, the embryo of current Fiocruz, founded on May 25, 1900. Since then, the institution has unfolded on many fronts and today includes institutes dedicated to research, education, reference assistance, surveillance, scientific dissemination, technology, and the production of medicines and vaccines. This multiple action gives it a unique configuration, mobilizing several areas of knowledge, in order to benefit the Brazilian population by strengthening the Single Health System and the Science, Technology, and Innovation System (CT&I). In the pages of this Portal, Fiocruz, present in all regions of the country, shows itself in its plurality and promotes its view of communication as a public good and of access to information as a social determinant of health.
The commitment to defend the universal right to health, to strengthen the SUS, to promote CT&I, and to value health in the environmental agenda and in sustainable development have become even more urgent in the face of the COVID-19 health emergency, which hit everyone especially hard, even if not in an equal way. The pandemic has challenged Fiocruz to seek ways to minimize its serious impact in a country deeply marked by inequalities and impels us to reinvent life, reinforcing its commitment to society and its dedication to health for over 120 years, to science, health, education, and the promotion of equity.
A strategic state institution and the heritage of society, Fiocruz is the result of the daily and collective efforts of its workers, who contribute to its excellence and its national and international recognition. Its performance, alongside partner institutions, is essential to the country and to the project of a healthy, sustainable future, with reduced inequalities at a global level.
The history, projects, and works of the institution travel through the pages of this Website, in a meeting of tradition and innovation that the visitor may get to know.
