This Monday (29/08) begins a new series of four webinars that Fiocruz and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) carry out on infectious diseases. The meetings are the result of a joint effort to promote scientific collaboration, enhance mutual understanding and strengthen national health capacity. Foundation and CAS researchers will discuss microbiology, pandemic prevention and control.

At the meeting, broadcast via zoom at 7 am (Brazilian time) in English, Brazilian and Chinese scientists will present their views and recent experiences. In their presentations, they will address topics such as pathogens and ways to control and prevent them, with a view to consolidating collaboration between institutions.

The webinar will be opened by the coordinator of the Fiocruz Global Health Center (Cris/Fiocruz), Paulo Buss, and by the general director of the Chinese International Cooperation Office, Zhengyu Wang. Then, researchers from the CAS Institute of microbiology Linqi Wang and the senior researcher in science, technology and innovation in public health at the Carlos Chagas Institute (Fiocruz-Paraná) Márcio Rodrigues open the morning of presentations.

Rodrigues, who will make a presentation on “the Brazilian arsenal to combat fungal, bacterial and viral diseases”, believes that the interaction with the CAS will benefit the Brazilian and Chinese scientific communities on several levels. “Recently the whole world has consolidated the view that infectious diseases can be very dynamic and impact our lives. International collaboration is essential for fighting these diseases”, says the researcher.

He adds that, in the first webinar, topics related to fungal, viral and bacterial diseases will be discussed, in addition to fundamental tools for research in these areas. At the end of the meeting, there will be a closing session and a question and answer session.

Continuity of scientific collaboration

The Vice-Presidency of Production and Innovation in Health (Vppis) with the Center for Technological Development in Health (CDTS/Fiocruz) has been organizing meetings with scientific institutions in China since 2017. Last year, for example, Vppis organized the first of seminars on infectious diseases. The cooperation between Fiocruz and CAS seeks, among other things, to promote joint research between the institutions and improve mutual understanding in health sciences between China and Brazil.
