Fiocruz's president, Nísia Trindade Lima, was invited to be a member of the Steering Committee Gender Summit, which had its first meeting on January 26th. The group is composed of high-level representatives from key institutions, responsible for approving and suggesting ideas on the final agenda of the event. The 20th Gender Summit will be hosted by Brazil, in June 2021, virtually. Preparations for the GS20 are guided by the central partnership between CNPq (National Council for Scientific and Technological Development), the British Council in Brazil and Portia (founder of GS). The 20th Gender Summit will be the third for Latin America, after GS8 in Mexico in 2016 and GS12 in Chile in 2017.

The Gender Summit, created in 2011, is a platform for dialogue where scientists, legislators, gender scholars and stakeholders in scientific systems examine new research evidence that shows when, why and how biological differences (sex) and differences socio-cultural (gender) between women and men have an impact on results. The Gender Summit is not a conference in the traditional sense, as it requires that each event: 1) be conducted by a partnership of institutions influential in the science system; 2) focus on scientific evidence and consensus; and 3) produce recommendations for positive actions. It is a non-profit initiative, operating in several global regions: Europe, Africa, Asia-Pacific, North America and Latin America and the Caribbean.
