Fiocruz is part of the executive group created by the Ministry of Health (MS) to monitor the actions for the strengthening of the Health Economic-Industrial Complex, announced last Monday (3/4), with the aim to expand the national production, reduce Brazil's dependence and ensure universal access to health. It is expected that, with this action, 70% of the needs of the Unified Health System (SUS) regarding drugs, equipment, vaccines and other medical materials, is met within ten years.

“Fiocruz, which is now a member of Geceis, is entirely available, along with the other partners, to carry out this major project, which will provide greater autonomy to the country and inclusion through health, with a stronger SUS that induces the economic and social development", states Mario Moreira, Acting President of Fiocruz. Besides Fiocruz, 20 public bodies participate in the group under the coordination of the Ministries of Health and of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services (MDIC).

To make the expansion of the national production feasible, the Ministry of Health is articulating an inter ministerial action and a broad investment program focused on innovation, technology and regional development. The main guideline of the new policy is to ally economic growth with the demands of public health and social issues in the country.

The creation of the Executive Group of the Health Economic-Industrial Complex (Geceis) is one of the most strategic immediate actions for the agenda of the Health Economic-Industrial Complex and, according to the Minister of Health, Nísia Trindade Lima, the inclusion of the letter "e" in the executive group refers to the term 'economic', in a clear allusion to the path towards development proposed by the government. The interministerial group will work in the construction and follow-up of actions for the strengthening of the Health Economic-Industrial Complex. One of the priorities will be facing Brazil's dependence on Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs), vaccines, medical equipment and materials.

“It is a great satisfaction to see the recreation of Geceis, as a fundamental basis for the effort to reindustrialize the country, in a sector of great importance for the sustainability of the SUS and to ensure access. The minister presented a challenging goal to expand Ceis, so that it meets 70% of SUS' demand for health goods in 10 years. The federal government thus shows its commitment to realizing this concept conceived at Fiocruz by researcher Carlos Gadelha, who is now the Secretary of Science, Technology, Innovation and Health Complex (Sectics)”, points out Mário Moreira.

Some of the planned actions include the national reindustrialization, expansion of production and generation of jobs and productivity, optimization of the purchasing power of the State, funding of science, reduction of productive and technological dependence, as well as guidance of the regulatory environment and regional and global cooperation. To foster regional development, instruments to support local production and competitive and tax isonomy will also be discussed.
