The Oswaldo Cruz Foundation, through the Leônidas and Maria Deane Institute (ILMD/Fiocruz Amazônia) and the Center for Data and Knowledge Integration for Health (Cidacs/Fiocruz), together with the University of Glasgow's School of Health & Wellbeing in the United Kingdom, have opened a selection process for proposals from young Brazilian and British PhD holders who wish to participate in the Amazonia BR/UK Workshop. The event will discuss the role of the Amazon in the context of climate change and will be held in June 2025 in the city of Manaus.

The deadline for submitting proposals is January 26th. Those interested should submit their proposals to: sedhi@glasgow.ac.uk. To view the online registration form, click here.

The event Quantifying the environmental impact of climate change in the legal Amazon and its effects on population health: from the local to national level has funding from the British Council, under the International Science Partnerships Fund (ISPF). Twenty papers will be selected: ten from Brazilian researchers and ten from British researchers.

The workshop aims to promote peer-to-peer learning and development in health, environment, climate and data sciences; develop a program and a theory for interventions aimed at mitigating the effects of climate change on health, tailored to the context of the Amazon region; and produce a comprehensive report that synthesizes existing knowledge, identifies gaps and collectively establishes a research agenda.

To participate, those interested must either have completed or be close to completing a PhD; not have held a permanent academic position with a significant research component or research-related responsibilities; not have had substantial experience supervising PhD students; and not have acted as the principal investigator on a research project. Fiocruz Amazônia researcher Jesem Orellana, head of the Laboratory of Modeling in Statistics, Geoprocessing and Epidemiology (Legepi), is the coordinator of the initiative for the Brazilian Legal Amazon. Professor Jonathan Olsen, from the University of Glasgow's School of Health & Wellbeing (UK), is the general coordinator of the event.
