The unit of Owaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) in Ceará has as main objectives to strengthen the primary health care and the Family Health Strategy, acting in the area of research, development and innovation in pharmaceuticals, medicines, health equipment and materials, and to conduct scientific research aimed at environmental and epidemiological reality of the region, among other activities.

Since February 2009, Fiocruz maintains a technical office in the state that works in the building of the Torre Saúde of São Matheus Hospital. The core promotes the exchange of professionals and initiatives for structuring the actions of the Foundation in Ceará. Ceará, after all, has important political and economic dimension, strategic role for regional development and accumulates notorious academic competency and experience in public health.

One of the highlighted initiatives of Fiocruz Ceará is the creation of the Rede Nordeste de Formação em Saúde da Família (Renasf ) - Northeast Network of Training in Family Health, in partnership with educational institutions and research in the region, with the State Secretary and the Municipal Secretary of Health.

The future headquarters of Fiocruz Ceará will be built on a land of 10 acres, given by the State Government, located in the Industrial and Technological Center of Health, the city of Euzébio, bordering Fortaleza.
