The president of Fiocruz, Mario Moreira, participated this Friday (1/31) in the launch of the 4th 100 Days Mission Implementation Report at an event held by the International Pandemic Preparedness Secretariat (IPPS). The IPPS, in collaboration with the Government of South Africa and the South African Medical Research Council, organized the event. The Foundation's president participated in a panel on strengthening Public-Private Partnerships and a workshop on building research and development ecosystems for pandemic preparedness and response.

Moreira highlighted the importance of Collaborative Open Research Consortia (CORCs) as a new model for meeting urgent demands and exploring new fronts in the response to health emergencies. "We expect that the CORCs will improve connections between academia, funding mechanisms, public and private research and development platforms, policymakers and other actors, strengthening public policies and ensuring efficiency and agility in the response to epidemics and pandemics," he said.

The president of Fiocruz emphasized that public-private partnerships (PPPs) pose significant challenges, especially the formulation of financing mechanisms to support the product development model in emergency contexts, where there is no final guarantee of purchase. "We need to strengthen scientific forums that speed up collaboration and the flow of information and create co-financing mechanisms that optimize the quality and accessibility of research," he said. He emphasized that Fiocruz's experience proves the feasibility of a solidarity model of cooperation and that building a promising future in global health depends on the joint commitment of public and private partners.

South-South cooperation and strengthening vaccine production

During the trip to Africa, Fiocruz also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Institut Pasteur in Dakar on January 22nd. The document consolidates an agenda for cooperation in research, innovation and production, with a focus on expanding productive capacities and reducing inequalities in access to health technologies. At the meeting, which was attended by Mario Moreira and the directors of Bio-Manguinhos, Maurício Zuma and Ricardo Godoi, the importance of structuring cooperation between countries in the Global South was emphasized.

The memorandum establishes bases for collaboration in teaching, research, technological development, communication, information, management and health policies. Moreover, technology transfer and licensing initiatives are planned, reinforcing the institutions' commitment to health sovereignty on the African continent.

On January 23rd, Moreira, Zuma and Godoi also visited the facilities of Marbio, a company recently set up in Morocco to boost vaccine production in the country. During the visit, opportunities for strategic partnerships were discussed in key areas such as the development of new technologies, the manufacture of immunobiologicals and the training of professionals.

The president also took part in the Brazilian Export Promotion Agency (Apex) mission to Nigeria, with the aim of strengthening commercial ties and technological cooperation. Health was one of the sectors highlighted, with the prospect of collaboration with the Nigerian Ministry of Health in the area of diagnostics, milk banks, training in public health and other topics of interest.
