IOC director receives honorary doctorate

The director of the Oswaldo Cruz Institute (IOC/Fiocruz), Tania Cremonini de Araujo-Jorge, was awarded the title of honorary doctorate by the Grenoble Alpes University of France. In granting the recognition, the French institution highlighted the scientist's work in research on mechanisms and new treatments of Chagas disease, as well as her work in the field of science education and in the fight against SARS-CoV-2.

 
The statement also highlighted the researcher's role in partnerships with scientists at Grenoble Alpes University, who reinforce interdisciplinarity against current scientific, social and environmental challenges. The honor will be awarded in 2023.

The first woman to hold the position of director of the IOC, Tania was elected in 2021 for her third term at the head of the Institute's board. With more than 200 articles and chapters of books published, she works in the areas of innovations in neglected diseases, applied pharmacology and science teaching, and she developed educational materials and social technologies that articulate science, art and health.

Founder of the Laboratory of Innovations in Therapies, Teaching and Bioproducts of the IOC, the scientist is the leader of the Selenium Project, the first clinical study on the effect of selenium supplementation on chronic Chagas heart disease.

Among other recognitions, she received the Baldacci Prize for scientific publication in Chagas disease in 2012. Since 2020, she is one of the coordinators of the Translational Research Program on Chagas Diseases at Fiocruz (Fio-Chagas).

In the field of teaching, Tania was one of the founders and coordinator, from 2018 to 2021, of the Graduate Program in Teaching in Biosciences and Health of the IOC, currently evaluated with concept 6 by the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (Capes). Between 2013 and 2018, the scientist was the coordinator of the Graduate Area in Teaching of Capes, participating in the Scientific Technical Council of Higher Education.
