International partnerships

Flags of several countries fluttering side by side

The international partnerships at Fiocruz are governed by various collaborative agreements. The following is a list of the agreements currently in force

North-South

In France, FIOCRUZ is the only Brazilian institution that belongs to the Pasteur World Network, which maintains projects with the Alliance Nationale pour les Sciences de la Vie et la Santé (Aviesan), a French national institution that includes the Institut National de la Santé et de la Recherche Médicale (Inserm), Institut de Recherche pour le Développment (IRD), Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), and Institut Pasteur itself, in addition to agreements with various French universities.

In the United States, the main partnerships are with the National Institutes of Health (NIH), which provide financial support to various research projects at Fiocruz. In addition, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) maintain partnerships with several units at FIOCRUZ, as do various American universities.

The international agencies of Canada (CIDA), Japan (JICA), and Germany (GIZ) support tripartite projects together with Fiocruz and developing countries.

With the support of the European Commission, Fiocruz coordinates the EU-LAC Health Project, including a consortium of organizations from various countries (Germany, Argentina, Brazil, Costa Rica, Spain, Italy, Mexico, and Switzerland), aimed at policymaking to support cooperation in research and development (R&D).

Fiocruz also has agreements with universities in the United Kingdom, Portugal, Spain, Australia, and Belgium, among others.

South-South

South-South partnerships mainly include institutions from African countries whose official language is Portuguese (Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, and São Tomé and Principe) and member countries of the Union of South American Nations (Unasul) and other Latin American countries (Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guiana, Haiti, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay, and Venezuela.)

Networks of structuring institutions have been established with their secretariats located at FIOCRUZ: Network of National Health Institutes (Rins), Network of National Schools of Public Health (Resp), Network of Technical Schools in Health (Rets), and the Pan-Amazonian Network for Science and Technology. In addition to the above, the Brazilian Network of Human Milk Banks (rBLH) has been replicated in other South American countries.
