The project will be the largest center for the production of biological products in Latin America and one of the most modern in the world. The Santa Cruz complex will increase the number of products made by Fiocruz, with new technology transfer processes and higher production capacity. The plant will have 334,000 square meters of built area.
The patient had two positive RT-PCR tests, with 100 days between the two episodes of respiratory infection. This is considered the first confirmed case of reinfection in Brazil, as all procedures adopted in the protocol established by the Ministry of Health were followed.
In the state of Pará, along the Tapajós River, the munduruku indigenous population is suffering from mercury used in mining activities. All participants of the research are affected by the contaminant. Six out of every 10 participants presented mercury levels above safe thresholds.
Four of them had not been sequenced in Brazil so far. The new identified lineages are B.1.107; B.1.111; B.1.1.2; and B.1.35, which circulated in Denmark, Colombia, the United Kingdom, and Wales, respectively. This makes the number of lineages found in Brazil jump to 30.
The meeting addressed the prospect of new partnerships involving drugs and combinations for neglected diseases; antiretrovirals; immunosuppressants; biomolecules for the treatment of cancer, vaccines, nanotechnology and natural products. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is due to be prepared soon.
The main cooperation with British institutions beeing carried out is the agreement for the vaccine developed by the University of Oxford. The Foundation also maintains partnership with several other institutions in the UK.
A drug used to treat hepatitis C prevented transmission of the virus during pregnancy and prevented malformations in trials with Rhesus monkeys, considered to be the experimental model closest to humans.
The foundation became the first institution to receive the distinction, which is usually dedicated to personalities who work for development and social well-being, human dignity, and commitment to scientific knowledge, culture, education, and public health in their areas of activity.
The patent for the kit has its deposit approved in 2018 in Brazil. In September 2020, it was accepted by the European Community, including the 11 countries that are not part of the Community, for a total of 38 countries. The patent has also been deposited in China, United States and Canada.
Nísia Trindade Lima was elected a full member in the Social Sciences category and Milena Botelho Pereira Soares was elected a full member in the Biomedical Sciences category
The 2020 Dr. Lee Jong-wook Public Health award was given to the coordinator of the Global Network of Human Milk Banks, João Aprígio Guerra de Almeida.
The award expands and promotes the consolidation of cancer research at Fiocruz Bahia, through project financing, training and cooperation.
The first course translated into English and adapted to the platform's audience was "Transmission, surveillance, control, and prevention of Yellow Fever".
